This is a book that you would actually want your modern teenager to read. It is full of difficult subjects, but they are all issues that today's young adults have to face. It is one of those books that you can't put down. Be prepared to have a conversation with your son or daughter if they read it -- there are many good and bad choices made throughout the book and are great entrees for discussions of values, choices, and consequences. Very thought provoking.

The Warring Soul Kristen Wells 9781621478416 Books Reviews

I enjoyed reading this book. Kate is a very likeable protagonist. As a mother, I felt myself wishing that she had some caring adult in her life to come along side her a mentor. As a result, I was relieved when Amy enters the story as friend and mentor, and ultimately leads Kate to Christ. I plan to give this book to my two young adult daughters to read. I would also recommend it to young adult women starting college or beginning independence and their mothers. Young women need to be aware of the dangerous of trusting young men, and even girlfriends, in situations where drugs and alcohol are involved. Date rape and date rape drugs a very real problem and girls need to be aware of the need to be very careful. As a Christian, I felt that the book also did well with showing how our past does not matter. Christ forgives us and wants the best for us. In my church we have been learning about the importance of trials in our lives and how trials helps us to grow in our relationship to Christ.

Kate is a freshman at UC Santa Barbara. She is an unwanted to child who wants to be loved and successful. She makes friends with a couple of other students and through one of them she is sucked into the college party scene. At first she manages to party on weekends and stay focused on her studies that changes when she ends up feeling betrayed by one boy and (spoiler alert) her boyfriend tries to rape her after they break up. After she is attacked, Kate finds a real friend in Amy who helps her start to put her life back together. Amy introduces Kate to people who become family to her. Most important Amy takes her to church where she learns about Christ and how her loves her. (Spoiler Alert) Kate accepts Christ but still does not really believe He loves her because she does not feel worthy of love. She still has trials to go through to get to the point where she understands that Christ is sufficient for all her needs.
I won this book in a contest on Goodreads. I was excited about reading something from an author with whom I was not familiar. I took it on a road trip during Thanksgiving break.

At first the language put me off. It was too stilted to be realistic. I have worked at a university bookstore and can tell you from experience that college students generally DO NOT speak in complete sentences. They use lots of contractions and even resort to text lingo, like LOL. Kristen Wells used proper English, but it was much more formal than you will hear on most university campuses these days!

There were also a distracting number of typos in the book. I am a free-lance editor, so of course, I notice more than most. But a lot of these mistakes made passages confusing. I found myself having to re-read sentences to figure out what the author was trying to say. Since I was reading it aloud, it made the book confusing at times for my traveling companion.

All of that aside, this was a suspenseful, compelling story. From the prologue, the author had me intrigued with Kate's description of her life thus far defying the odds--but in a negative way. I found myself talking to the characters, telling them not to do this or that or to get a clue about what was happening!

The characters in the story were mostly believable. I can identify with Kate, being self-conscious and not feeling worthy of guys' attention. Her guarded relationship with Evan was understandable, considering her disappointment with Paul. It was sweet watching their friendship unfold. I did find it hard to believe that Evan would figure out Kate's "friend Sam" was a girl and not a guy without any indication from her to that effect. Charlotte's match-making was annoying, as was Demetri's extreme chauvinism. Rich, drop-dead gorgeous, famous or not, I would have cut and run the first time any guy told me he didn't want me to do anything but do what he said and be a homemaker! Jay was super-scary, which would make any girl freak out and forget every sensible course of action she could choose.

Parts of the ending were completely unexpected, while others were predictable. And the author left you with an obvious indication that a sequel is forth-coming.

If you or a young lady you care about feel like you don't deserve God's or a good man's affection, then this is a good book to read. If you wonder whether God is on your side and feel unlucky in life, this would also make a good choice. I hope Kristen Wells finds a better editor, but I think she is a fine story-teller.
After reading every Francine Rivers novel I thought I wouldn't find another good book for awhile. I was blown away by The Warring Soul. The story and characters were addicting! I cannot wait for book 2!!!
I have to say this was an awesome book. I couldn't put it down. I could relate to Kate! As I struggle with my own walk. I can't wait to read the next book. This is a MUST read!! 0) God bless.
Agents always tell writers that a first line is always important to grab the reader. Kristen does this in her novel Her writing kept me going until the end. This is a great story about hope, friendship, and trusting the Lord. She did a great job with her character. The story felt natural and not preachy. It is a fun read and I'll remember those characters for a long time.(less)
A gripping novel that was hard to put down! In some ways, a coming-of-age story, as a young girl leaves everything she has known and goes away to college. Highlights her struggles, life-changing decisions, relationships, and her own growth. Suspenseful and thrilling also! Looks to be a great start in this new series, and I will definitely be getting future novels from this great author as soon as they are available.
