WOW, this was a real treat! Unlike many of the fantasy novels you read today, this Sacred Band Tale is steeped in ancient mythology, both tantalizingly beautiful and brutally savage. The story is populated by a fascinating cast of witches, mages, epic warriors, and Gods, each with his or her own motivations and agendas.

In this brief tale, we are introduced to some of the main characters in the Sacred Band Series. The story begins with Roxane, the witch, who, morphing into eagle form, flies back to Wizardwall, a land of dark sorcery and home of the archmage, Datan. Roxane is as beautiful and seductive as she is bloody. We also meet Tempus, aka "The Riddler", an epic warrior and his companion, Jihan, Froth Daughter of Enlil, who has newly taken on human form. They are journeying to do battle with Datan and the forces of magic in a land already ravaged by war. Into this mix comes a boy, Shamshi, son of Datan and a mortal woman, in whom mage-like powers have yet to be awakened as well as another warrior and companion of Tempus, Nico, who Roxane plans to seduce and conquer.

This is truly an epic drama. The writing is masterful and the imagery is magnificent with exquisite attention to detail. If you are a fan of Homer and Greek or Roman mythology, a fantasy freak, or just like plain good writing, then you will love this book and, from this reader, it comes most highly recommended.

An appetizer, a little slice of the old school ancient world as richly brought to life by Janet Morris. This is old school fantasy, not the usual young adult stuff which is so popular now it's all but eclipsed decades of sword and sorcery novels we used to hide from our parents as teens. Not that I don't love a lot of the young adult stuff, some of it is brilliant. But for authenticity and attention to details it's hard to match the masterful writing of Janet Morris who as been delivering such novels for decades now.

This brief telling introduces some of the main character just enough to wet the appetite. The action is fast and brutal. Fans of Janet and Chris Morris epic sagas will know that their characters are far to complex to be completely described within he confines of a single volume. The characters in this story are mythic and beyond mortal characters descriptions. Wizards, Gods, shades, mages, fiends and beast of all description are seldom what the appear at any given point in the story. A story which doesn't so much conclude as set the stage for the next telling promising more puzzles, escapes and conflicts for the readers enjoyment. This is an appetizer, a pallet cleanser before the main course, a pleasant sampling to wet the appetite, where ever you want to place it on the menu. It is a work that can be enjoyed stand alone or as prelude to more. I'm guessing that you may start by just ordering appetizers, but will want to take home more.
Dark and grittier than the Black Company. Mage Blood is an entertaining media-res introduction to Tempus, the Riddler, Niko, and the Sacred Band of Stepsons, characters created by Janet and Chris Morris.

Filled with an ancient pantheon of deities as found in Greco-Roman times, archmages of nearly godlike power, and the nations that serve as their pawns, Mage Blood delivers a raw look at what warcraft might have been under such conditions in ancient times.

For those who like the realism, the no-holds-barred look at warring nations and the insatiable appetites of wizards with too much power and little able to withstand it, I recommend delving in to the Sacred Band series. Mage Blood is an excellent place to start.
