So Wide the Sky The Women West Series Book 1 edition by Elizabeth Grayson Romance eBooks

I'll always have a soft spot for this wonderful story. When she was fifteen Cassandra Morgan was captured by the Kiowas and spent the next nine years as their captive, and then later taken in trade as a wife to a Cheyenne warrior. She was known as Sweet Grass Woman. Eventually Cassandra was traded back to the "whites" but was met with distrust and prejudice. Everyone knew what happened to a white woman who had been captured. Cass was also marked during her captivity and bore a "starburst" tattoo on her cheek.

As Cassandra tried to assimilate back into the world she once knew she found that she no longer belonged in either world. There was only one person who knew what it was like, a half breed scout by the name of Hunter Jalbert.

This was a wonderful, heartwrenching western historical romance. The characters came alive on the page. Cassandra's plight was gutwrenching and you can't help but feel her bewilderment as she struggled to overcome the guilt of surviving and returning. Her angst and despair were palpable.

I read this book many, many years ago but had mislaid my copy so I was so very pleased to see this story and several other works by this very talented author made available for kindle. This was a wonderful, angst filled romance.

So Wide the Sky The Women West Series Book 1 edition by Elizabeth Grayson Romance eBooks Reviews

Describing this story for me is difficult. It was so well written, so beautifully told and very heart warming. I love walking through the woods. When the author was describing how the earth smelled and how the sky looked, I knew those exact feelings.

The heartache of being between between two worlds is indescribable if you have not been there. Never fitting in is very lonely. The feelings of not being just like the others is confusing. There was one however who knew exactly how she felt as he too was in the same boat. When and if you find that person, you find a relief that no one else can understand.

If you like Western historical fiction, this is the BEST story that I have ever read. Including the loving, soft, understanding romance that finally comes to her .
This was an interesting book from page one! This young couple who grew up together traveled west before the civil war began. Their families were ambushed and killed by Indians, and Drew vowed to get revenge. The two girls were taken by the Indians. After seven years Cassie was brought back to the fort because she was barren. No man wanted her. Drew realized this was Cassie from his childhood. She had many Indian ways which Drew couldn't deal with, but he needed her to look after his four year old daughter. Without giving away more of the story, I'll just say it is well worth the time to read it!!
Cassandra (Cass) Morgan believes she’s the only survivor of the Indian attack on the small wagon train nine years ago. Sold back to the US Army for a wagonload of supplies, she belongs to neither world.
Captain Drew Reynolds’ hatred of Indians and need for revenge festered during his years at West Point and continued during the Civil War. Now he’s in Wyoming, eager to battle against the Indians who killed all the people he loved.
Cass and Drew were sweethearts before they were torn apart by the Indian attack. Now she’s back, but her facial tattoo prevents him from totally accepting her. He intends to hire her as housekeeper for his young, motherless daughter but Cass insists on marriage. She needs the protection of his rank and status – but even that is not enough to prevent others from twisting facts to paint her as a traitor.
Only one man at the fort – the half-breed scout Hunter Jalbert – understands her position.
This is a great story told well. I appreciated the frequent references to Cass’ need to see the wide sky of the American West.
I literally have been having heart palpitations everytime I pick up this book. It is so good, so engrossing. The complexity of characters was astounding. The duality of Cass' life was heartwrenching at times. This book opened my eyes to the war on the plains. I've always been on the side of the Native American and have taught my children that we only live here because the white man killed the Native Americans and stole their land. I hated learning in school about how the land was seized and the Natives forced out, always with a healthy dose of 'us whites earned this land and were good and fair to the Indians'. This book shows that. It shows what you were never taught. The wars were terrible on both sides and prejudice ran long and deep in the hearts if anyone touched by the wars.
This book shows why those prejudices and hurts were so ingrained so vital for the people who had them held on with all they had or face the bitter truth of what they were doing. This book was simply amazing. I find I want to read sections to my children to teach them how it really was then but will wait till they're older.
HIGHLY recommend this wonderful book but give caution to the weak of heart, this book doesn't sugar coat anything and you will be tossed about emotionally for the duration.
I rarely give 5 stars and this book earned every single one.
Happy reading, cheers
This was a very detailed book that puts you right there with the characters in the story. Cassandra and Drew’s families were traveling together to start a new life out west. After being attacked by Indians and taken captive Cassie spent 9 years doing everything to just survive before being traded back to the whites. Two men will love her but only one will be able to love her for who and what she is after being a Indian captive. This is an amazing story I think anyone would love to read!
