This book has a good premise that kept me going. Fair warning, there's a lot of descriptions; the book has that sense of lot's happening, but while scenes change frequently, I felt the plot was slow. Much of the book didn't seem to move the plot forward. The main character is always whining, too, and stepping back, flinching away, gasping, gaping, or stunned. She comes across very helpless and is constantly a victim, but she creates her own problems. I expected her to be tough and smart and I mostly saw her making stupid decisions with no knowledge to back them up. The girl has no survival skills, which is a hard sell for me given her occupation. No want times does she have to be grabbed and pinned before she decides to fight for herself? It's utterly mind blowing how she let's herself be a victim and it makes her unlikable to me. I am hoping book 2 sees her gaining some smarts and fighting back.

Dark Hope The Devil Assistant Book 1 eBook HD Smith Reviews

While at first the story can seem disjointed and somewhat familiar in its style, the author quickly disabused the reader from this notion that we are reading another retread of "the accidental anything" which seems a popular strategy lately. We are immersed in a story that while it does tread familiar urban fantasy/romance/fantasy clichés it does it in a very unique, novel and original manner with fully developed characters and an intelligent plot.
Dark Hope was awesome and I'm sad it's done. Being inside Claire's head, the author did the most amazing job of having the reader truly experience everything right through Claire's eyes. I loved every twist and turn. Even when I thought I knew the direction the novel was headed, HD Smith took a zigzag and surprised me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy/paranormal.
This book was a very interesting premise, and the start to a new series about Claire, who is the personal assistant for the devil.
The world building and different places like the underworld were explored and played an important part in story development.
Writing was good, one error, scrapped instead of scraped, was all I noticed.
Unfortunately I am just not that excited about this genre of fantasy as I am some others.
An awesome storyline with strong characters and a fast paced plot. HD Smith did an awesome job of keeping my attention and my finger sliding the pages on my kindle. Her descriptions were vivid and the emotions she brought out of the reader intense at times. All in all a great read and I'm ready to read the next in the series.
I'm not one to write reviews, I really prefer reading to writing, but when a new author comes along I feel the need to support them where possible. I was recommended this book by a friend, and thought 'well, it's free, so lets download it and see'. Well, I read this in a couple of days, and then the next and then the one right after that. I was absorbed totally and couldn't put them down.

The book itself is a variant on urban fantasy, but with some new twists, and HD Smith's writing is smooth, with some humour. If you're looking for something new, and like authors like Kim Harrison etc, I recommend picking this one up.
It has been a long time since I read a book I couldn't put down. This story is like peeling a giant onion, there is always another layer underneath. It sucks you in and doesn't let go. What a ride!
Dark Hope is a unique read. Our protagonist Claire is employed as the Devil/Summer Kings assistant. This isn’t exactly a job you can just quit; that could land you in hell. The Boss is prickly, impatient and will not provide Dental, and he’s serious about no Dental! Claire is pretty sure the Boss actually hates her but so far she manages to keep her job and her soul in one piece. That is until someone decides to interfere with Claire’s life.

This urban fantasy is gritty. Frankly Claire’s life kinda sucks; she handles it pretty well but man you really feel like she drew the short straw in life. You really do hope that the fates give her a break because wow she deserves one. Her goal in Dark Hope is just to survive the next few days, try and figure out what is going on, why she’s being set up, and who is doing the setting up. After this week is all said and done her life is never going to be like it was, for better or worse.

Dark Hope was entertaining; the topics are fairly dark and it does have a bit of violence, much of it is against Claire. There is no romance and no sex scenes; only some attempted ones. Probably to mature of subject matter for most YA and more of a new adult to adult novel.
