Coming up on my 300th Kindle download, and still finding the system confusing. Why does one Kindle edition of this book cost $11.26 (virtually the same price as the paperback), while this one - which is annotated, presumably making it the better choice - is 99 cents? And why no indication on the page for the $11.26 version that there is a cheaper option? Lesson for the day, boys and girls: If the version you're looking to buy seems a bit dear, don't assume that there aren't other choices, just because there is no "other editions" button to click on.

Anyway, to the book at hand: If you, like most people (sadly), are unaware that Conan Doyle's oeuvre is not limited to the Sherlock Holmes stories, google his bibliography sometime. His prolificacy is as impressive as his versatility -- 22 novels and hundreds of shorter works of fantasy and science fiction, romances, historical novels, and non-fiction, not to mention a dozen or so plays, and several poetry collections. Sir Nigel and White Company (its prequel) are, in my humble opinion, his best in the historical novel category. Both are rollicking good tales, and they will teach you something about the Hundred Years War, which most folks slept through during their high school history class, if it was covered at all. John Wayne loved these books, according to his biographer -- pretty much the only thing I have in common with the Duke. Highly recommended.

Sir Nigel edition by Arthur Conan Doyle Romance eBooks Reviews

Highly recommended if you enjoy medieval adventure. Doubly so if you are looking for a story without the trappings of mythical creatures and magic use.

Adventure, honor, love... a very romanticized and idealized depiction of the lives of nobility in the mid 14th century are all elements. Add Doyle's talent for telling an interesting tale coherently, and it added up to a very enjoyable read. The arc of this follows Nigel from a determined squire and lone hope for his family name, through the end of the story. Nigel steadfastly stays the course by making difficult and honorable choices while facing a series of hardships, and is rewarded accordingly through this series of adventures. There are several characters in this story that stick with the reader even after several other books have been read.
Many young boys would probably give this book 5 stars because it is well written and full of action and real, courageous heroes. It is written as a historical novel, so it will be interesting to people who like to learn facts about this period of the past, too, which is the Middle Ages, the age of chivalry. It is definitely enjoyable to read, because it is exciting and the main characters are very likeable, but there are considerable fighting scenes, too, and resultant descriptions of the violence of that era. With this in mind I think the young male reader would enjoy it much more on the whole than the young woman, but everyone will find it worth reading.
This is one rattling good yarn, by a master author. The research the author must have done is phenomenal, and he brings a period of European history to vivid life. History as taught at school is mostly dry facts, and Conan Doyle has illuminated gorgeously a period that most people have no real clue about. We have been reading this as a bedtime story, and boy is there some bloody stuff in there, but mostly we are amazed by how different the culture and thought of the period is to the modern day. The Vikings never went away - they just changed their affiliations and dress, and it was business as usual. Most people have no idea how bloody the history of Europe really was - it was in a state of almost continual war, and yet there was gallantry, and honor to be won, as well as rich ransoms and loot. The author sticks closely to actual history - the central character, Nigel Loring, is a fruitcake by modern standards, but what a man!! NO review can do real justice to this book - you have to read it and marvel, simply marvel, at how it was. The common people are represented by the long bow archers, and their story is as important as that of the knights, nobles and kings. The English longbowmen were an incredible force to be reckoned with, and the amazing part of this is that the French never did seem to get it - they kept making the same mistake over and over. Samkin Aylward is a very round character, full of roister and humor, but also deadly in his trade. Sir Nigel is in love with chivalry, almost a throwback if you like to a somewhat earlier age, but he can fight like a demon, aided and abetted by his "thrice accursed warhorse" Pommers, who is worth three on a battlefield. I heartily and without reservation recommend this book and The White Company - beware for small children that some pretty ugly stuff happens, but that was the age, and the way it was.!!
Sir Nigel is a prequel to The White Company, providing the early history of Sir Nigel Loring and Samkin Aylward who are principal characters (but not the main character) in the earlier book. To have a full understanding and get full enjoyment from Sir Nigel, one certainly should read it after having read The White Company, not before. I gave The White Company 5 stars; and Sir Nigel is not as good; so, I give it only 4 stars. My main dissatisfaction with Sir Nigel is that Conan Doyle belabors the details in a few chapters, and I would have been happier if those chapters had ended more quickly. However, the details in many chapters are outstanding. Particularly the early chapter describing how Nigel Loring came to own and successfully ride his great war horse Pommers is outstanding. I felt like a few of the details in Sir Nigel might not be entirely consistent with details describe in The White Company, and I may have to re-read the earlier book to confirm or correct my thinking. Not an unpleasant undertaking to anticipate.
